AfricAm Health Focus is a newsletter written by D.M. Blake, an author,
editor, registered nurse, family nurse practitioner with a Masters
Degree in Nursing and legal nurse consultant with 15 years of
experience in health care. It is designed to target health issues with a
particular impact on the African American community and provide a central
portal of information. It provides a wide variety of health care information
for different age groups including children, teens, men, women, and the
elderly. There are many health disparities which place an extreme
disadvantage upon African Americans. Each ethnic group has some type
of genetic tendency for an illness or misfortune. They can affect the
overall health of individuals and families, something which we may or may
not be able to change. Ethnicity is one’s heritage, from which we cannot
escape. In addition, there are other social and economic disadvantages
making access to health care information difficult to reach for African
Americans. Health care providers often deal with hectic schedules
allowing less and less time to focus on individual health risks and health
maintenance. However, if given access to the necessary information,
many will be able to make the right decisions and lifestyle changes needed
to lead a healthy life and maintain wellness while working closely with
his/her health care provider.
The newsletter provides a holistic view with up-to-date
information of various subjects tailored to meet the needs of its
target groups. It includes articles, quizzes, checklists, puzzles and more
providing a variety of media. It has the information which is not only up-to-
date, but also topped with the personal touch of a primary care clinician
dedicated to educating the public. Although made especially for the
African-American community, there is a lot of general information as well
which will prove valuable to anyone of any ethnicity.
